Veterinarians warn of negligence in Palau’s K-9 dog program

Dr. Christine Desina Singio, a practicing veterinarian who played a key role in getting the project off the ground, has been a strong advocate for proper care for the dogs. Although she had only been contracted to care for the dogs for one year and three months in the four years since they arrived in Palau, her services were not renewed. This decision came despite her willingness to cover half of the costs to ensure the dogs received basic medical care.

Dr. Singh stressed the need for specialized veterinary services, including X-ray machines, which Palau currently lacks. The lack of such equipment means that potential health issues in police dogs may go undiagnosed and untreated, affecting their ability to perform their duties effectively.

Since returning to Palau after the birth of her child, Dr. Singio has not seen the dogs in more than a year. She is particularly concerned that one of the dogs has died, a situation she believes could have been avoided with proper care. Dr. Singio has been meeting with the president, vice president and other key agencies, urging them to address ongoing problems in the program.

Frustrated by the lack of commitment from officials, Dr. Singh suggested that if Palau is unable to provide the necessary support, the dogs should be moved to an environment where they can receive the care they need. She believes that if the government lacks the resources and commitment to effectively utilize the dogs, it would be better to place them in an environment that can adequately meet their needs.

The ongoing plight of the K-9 program has raised widespread concerns about the government’s ability to maintain this important initiative. The program’s decline not only jeopardizes the health and welfare of the dogs, it also undermines Palau’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and secure its borders. As the situation continues to unfold, the future of Palau’s military dogs—and their role in defending the country—remains uncertain, with their health and effectiveness still hanging in the balance.
