Innovation and Technology Scholarship | Honor 25 local students and each receive up to $150,000 – EJ Tech

The Innovation and Technology Commission, HSBC and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups have jointly established the “Innovation and Technology Scholarship” since 2011, selecting 25 outstanding university students each year and awarding each person a scholarship of up to HK$150,000 to support their participation in a series of elite training programs. The scholarship held its annual award ceremony yesterday.

Some selected students are currently participating in a chatbot project on mental health, hoping that the chatbot can provide immediate emotional support to those in need. This year’s scholarship has set up six major innovation and technology fields, including “Advanced Manufacturing”, “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics”, “Business and Financial Technology”, “Life and Health Technology”, “Sustainable Development and Green Technology” and “Cross-disciplinary Technology and Others”.

The 25 award-winning students come from six local universities. Each winner will receive a scholarship of up to HK$150,000 to support their participation in a series of training programmes, including temporary study abroad or in the Mainland, local internships, mentorship, service projects and exhibitions of innovative and technological ideas and results.

PolyU students develop mental health chatbot

Mak On-yu, who won the award in the field of “Life and Health Technology”, is studying nursing at the Polytechnic University. She is currently involved in two health-related innovation and technology projects, including a chatbot (Chatbox) related to mental health and a nursing teaching robot. She noticed that although most of the existing emotional support services in Hong Kong are provided by real people, the waiting time is too long, so she hopes to use the chatbot to provide immediate emotional assistance to those in need and reduce the possibility of deteriorating into serious mental problems. As for the nursing teaching robot, she said that the robot focuses on training students’ communication skills with patients, and hopes that in the future the robot can autonomously give corresponding feedback.

Zhang Kaishan, a fourth-year medical student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, is currently following doctors to conduct research on otolaryngology robotic surgery and plans to use the scholarship to go to the United States for exchange in June this year. Chen Zhicheng, a second-year medical student at the University of Hong Kong, who is in the field of “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Technology”, used AI technology to write a review application last summer, named “PDF2Anki”, which saves time in making question and answer cards and improves students’ review efficiency. The application will be launched in 2023, with about 70,000 users, and has been selected for the Cyberport incubator program.
