Some Surinamese people told GFC News that if they are unable to immigrate to the Netherlands, Guyana could be an attractive option.

a lot of Surinamese diplomas are not valued in Europewhich means that people often need to study for many years to reach European standards. This is largely a barrier to settling in the Netherlands.

Neighboring Guyana offers an easier option. Experts who contacted the GFC reported that Surinamese in Guyana encountered fewer obstacles and could get started more quickly.

Moreover, the salary will be more attractive. A Surinamese said that his family members work in Guyana and earn more than US$700 per month.

This salary is slightly higher than what many Surinamese earn in their own country, and the cost of living in Guyana is much lower than in the Netherlands.

Some see the neighboring country as a good alternative for Surinamese who cannot or do not want to immigrate to Europe.

“While sadly Surinamese diplomas are not always recognised in Europe, Guyana offers a nearby alternative where Surinamese can quickly start gaining their qualifications. For many, this country can offer a good way out to improve their living conditions,” they said.
