New leadership of the National Defense Force announced, Army welcomes first female chief of staff

The government has announced the leadership of the defence forces, including new chiefs of the navy and army.

Commodore Rose King will be promoted to rear admiral, becoming the first woman to hold that position, and Commodore Garin Golding will become rear admiral.

Air Vice Marshal Darin “Digby” Webb has been air chief since last year and will continue in the role – all three will serve three-year terms, effective August 27.

They report to Defence Force Chief Air Marshal Tony Davis.

Defense Secretary Judith Collins said in a statement that she looked forward to working closely with the three countries.

“These outstanding leaders are the most senior officers in the New Zealand Defence Force and have a wealth of experience, strategic insight and a commitment to serving our country,” she said.

Commodore Golding has served as Commander of the New Zealand Defence Force’s Maritime Forces since 2021.

Brigadier General Kim has served as acting Army Chief of Staff since June. From 2022 to 2024, she served as Deputy Army Chief of Staff.

Weber has served as Air Force Chief of Staff since 2023. From 2021 to 2023, he served as Deputy Chief of Defense Staff for Strategic Commitment and Engagement.

He is probably best known to New Zealanders as His role during the COVID-19 pandemic Supervise quarantine facilities.
