The World Health Organization has launched a global campaign to respond to human-to-human transmission of monkeypox, with a strategic preparedness and response plan to be extended from September 2024 to February 2025 and requiring US$ 135 million in funding.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the monkeypox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries is controllable and preventable.
According to a statement released by the World Health Organization, a fundraising appeal will be launched soon.
Announced yesterday, the plan aims to strengthen surveillance and response strategies, ensure equitable access to diagnostics and vaccines, reduce the spread of diseases from animals to humans, and enable communities to control outbreaks.
The vaccination programme targets high-risk groups, such as direct contacts of cases and healthcare workers, with the aim of cutting the chain of transmission.
