The National Party has called on the government to end a long-running investigation into four young ethical hackers, noting that their talents are currently being wasted rather than being properly utilized.
exist 2023Giorgio Grigolo, Michael Debono, Luke Bjorn Scerri and Luke Collins were scanning the software of student application FreeHour when they discovered a vulnerability that could be exploited by malicious hackers.
They emailed their findings to the owner of FreeHour and asked for a reward (or “bug bounty”) for finding the bug. However, instead of receiving a reward, the University of Malta students were arrested, searched, and had their computer equipment confiscated.
PN said in a statement on Tuesday that the lengthy investigation had put the students in legal limbo and cast doubt on their passion for cybersecurity. “We cannot let fear undermine innovation,” PN said.
The opposition said the case showed the government’s neglect of young talent, pointing to a European Cyber Security Challenge in Turin as a missed opportunity for students and Malta.
The KMT further pointed out that the lack of a national cybersecurity policy has resulted in digital innovation in this area not being nurtured.
“A comprehensive cyber security policy must be introduced as soon as possible so that young people have space to develop their skills.”
