The United States expressed disappointment that Guyana and Suriname were the only countries among the 15 CARICOM members to support the joint statement calling for democracy in Venezuela.

However, they are grateful that these countries agree that the Nicolás Maduro regime must respect the will of the Venezuelan people.

“It’s actually very disappointing. To us it seemed very clear that we were in favor of democracy. Steps needed to be taken regarding the elections.

“If other countries choose not to participate, that is their right, but we are disappointed,” U.S. Ambassador Nicole Theriot said Wednesday during the signing of a mineral mapping agreement in Guyana with U.S. firm Global Ventures Consulting.

Venezuela expelled diplomats from Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay following violent protests in Caracas and in response to election-related criticism, Reuters reported.
