Thief caught after stopping to read
A would-be thief in Rome was caught after he stopped to read a book on Greek mythology during a robbery.
The 38-year-old reportedly entered an apartment in the Italian capital’s Prati district via a balcony but became distracted after picking up a book of Homer’s Iliad from his bedside table.
The 71-year-old homeowner allegedly woke up and confronted the suspect, who was concentrating on reading a book.
News of the failed robbery caught the attention of the book’s author, who told local media he wanted to send the man a copy so he could “finish” reading it.
After being caught off guard, the alleged robber reportedly attempted a quick escape via the same balcony but was arrested a short time later.
He allegedly told police he climbed the building to visit someone he knew.
“I thought I was staying at a bed and breakfast and then I saw the book and started reading it.”
Giovanni Nucci, author of “The Gods at Six O’Clock,” which interprets the Iliad from the perspective of the gods, told the Courier: “It’s a fantastic book.”
“I want to find the man who was captured and give him the book because he will be arrested halfway through reading it. I want him to finish reading it.
“It’s a surreal story, but also very human.”
The thief was reportedly carrying a bag containing expensive clothing items that had allegedly been stolen from another home earlier that evening.
Mr. Nucci said his personal favorite god is Hermes, the god of thieves.
“He’s also the God of literature. Obviously, everything fits,” he joked.
