In June last year, Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera submitted a cabinet paper to the government proposing to allocate Rs2 billion to the Rice Marketing Board for procurement of rice this season.

According to the Chairperson of the Rice Marketing Board, Lawyer Buddhaka Iddamalgoda, the Cabinet met yesterday (26th) afternoon under the chairmanship of Honourable President Ranil Wickramasinghe and decided to provide Rs 500 million to the Rice Marketing Board in the first phase.

Therefore, the Rice Marketing Board decided to purchase rice starting today (27th).

Rice Marketing Board chairperson Buddhaka Iddamalgoda said for this purpose, 32 rice godowns have been prepared in areas where rice harvest has been completed and 100 more godowns have been prepared to be opened if necessary.

Currently, the market price of rice in Nadu is high, with the private sector buying it at Rs 120 per kg. But the chairman also said he was confident that farmers would not take steps to hand over their Nadu rice stocks to the Rice Marketing Board at the government controlled price.

He also said that the current price of keeri samba rice in the market has fallen to Rs 105-110, but he is willing to buy it at the maximum price set by the government for keeri samba, which is Rs 130. Therefore, the chairman said that he hopes that more Samba and Keeri Samba rice farmers will sell rice to the Rice Marketing Board.
