International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke had made an outstanding showing among the candidates for the post of Deputy Managing Director.
Georgieva held a news conference with five journalists from the region on Monday morning, during which she said Dr. Clark’s experience made him an ideal choice for the position.
“Dr Clark brings a unique perspective, firstly as the finance minister of a country that has changed significantly over the years since taking office in 2018, and has shown that it is possible to build strong institutions and have a remarkably resilient economy. Overcoming the challenges will benefit all member states, especially those facing similar challenges,” she said.
On October 31, Dr Clark will replace Antoinette Sayeh as one of the three deputy general managers.
Above this level there is also a first vice president.
“His role will be to assist me in leading the Fund and serving our 190 member states. In that sense, he will be in charge of our programmes and engagement with our member states. He will speak on behalf of the Fund and represent me in international forums. He will have the important responsibility of bringing the voice of small island states to bear, through his experience,” Georgieva said.
Unlike the general manager who can be re-elected for a five-year term, there is no fixed term requirement for the deputy general manager.
Dr Clark will be the first Caribbean citizen to hold the position.
