Downing Street Officials are preparing a “media plan” to announce the final passage of Larry the Cat, The Independent clear.
Larry has become a much-loved fixture at Downing Street, often seen outside 10 during major political events and news broadcasts.
The 17-year-old “Rat Catcher” The kitten is believed to be in the final years of his life, having already outlived the average lifespan for a tabby cat.
Government sources Tell The Times A press release and graphics had been drafted to “prepare for the grief of his loss.”
It was reported that as part of the plan to inform the public, folders in the No. 10 IT system contained images selected for release following the news of the death at No. 10.
One source said Larry is “doing fine” at this time, while another said: “We feel like we have to proceed very carefully with this.”
The cat was adopted from a Battersea cattery and was first brought into Downing Street by David Cameron as his children’s pet. It has accompanied five prime ministers to date.
The Cabinet Office website contains a biography of the beloved cat, which reads: “Larry has lived here since 15 February 2011 and is the first cat to be awarded the official title of ‘Mouse Catcher’ at 10 Downing Street.
“Larry was recommended by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home because he was good at catching mice. He joined Number 10 and made a significant impact.”
