Police arrest 97 Shia for killing policeman in Abuja

Nigerian police said 97 members of the banned Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as Shia, were detained following clashes in Abuja on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria earlier reported that the collision left two policemen dead and three seriously injured.

It is reported that three patrol cars were set on fire by Shiite militants during the conflict.

Reacting to the incident on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement via his Facebook page, said credible intelligence reports helped the police arrest the suspects who were detained.

Muyiwa added that the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on the matter would be implemented.

The statement read in part: “The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the unprovoked attack on police personnel on August 25, 2024, by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN, popularly known as Shia) in Abuja.

“The attackers, armed with machetes, IEDs and knives, launched several violent attacks, killing two policemen on the spot and leaving three in a coma, currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

“In addition, three police vehicles were set ablaze during the attack.

The ongoing efforts of the police, acting on the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD., NPM., fspsp., have resulted in the arrest of 97 suspects and the seizure of several weapons used in the attack.

“The IGP also reiterated that the police will spare no efforts to arrest other persons involved in the case and bring the perpetrators to book, stressing his commitment to maintaining law and order and resisting all forms of anarchy and unrest in any part of the country.

“The unprovoked killing of police officers in the line of duty is extremely outrageous and unacceptable, and those who killed these police officers also murdered the peace.”
