It’s crazy, it’s ridiculous: Several neighbouring residents have nothing but good things to say about the reopening of a tea shop in Bergen op Zoom. After the explosion, the shop had to close for a month, but it has now reopened. A few years ago, a fatal shooting took place at De Theepot on Wouwsestraatweg. “You’d be scared to live here,” said a 34-year-old resident.
“It’s become dangerous. My children are no longer allowed to play in the area,” the local resident continued. “This is crazy. Cases like this don’t belong here.” He pointed to the video doorbell on the street. “They are hung here for a reason. There is only activity here at night, and you can’t see anyone during the day.”
The man is concerned about what his neighbors will look like. “I can imagine you don’t want to live here. They’re renovating the houses nearby nicely, but it makes no sense.”
“Throw it away! It has to be closed,” a neighbor said firmly. “This is the second time, isn’t it? We are not comfortable.” After the explosion, a family’s car was damaged. “No one dares to park there anymore.” According to her, the city government “did nothing”. “The mayor didn’t even come.”

On the morning of Wednesday, July 10, an explosion blew out the windows of the teahouse. No one was reported injured. “I sat on the bed,” a 68-year-old woman recalled. The deputy mayor closed the teahouse for a month. On August 12, the shop reopened. “They immediately took down the note and opened it again after the holidays,” the neighbor continued.

The teahouse was infamous in 2021 for a fatal shooting. The then-mayor then closed the building for several months. It reopened in February 2022. Neighbors also opposed the reopening at the time. The gunman has now been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
The 68-year-old local resident added: “I’m not sure. Something might happen again. I think the teahouse can leave here.” She believes the teahouse’s troubles may also have financial consequences for her. “It’s bad for the value of your house.” A 41-year-old woman called it “double.” “I want to live here in peace, but the teahouse won’t have such a request, right?”
No one was in the tea house on a Monday afternoon. Couldn’t find a phone number or website for the tea house.
City government response
A spokesman for the Bergen op Zoom municipality confirmed that the closure had not been extended. He understood the feelings of local residents, but said no one had reported it to the municipality. He stressed that special investigators were keeping a close eye on the site. He said this month’s closure was a strong measure that had been taken.
