Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, said the government was committed to developing Vanua Levu, recognising its huge potential and unique charm.

Speaking at the official launch of the Damodar City Labasa hotel brand, Gavoka said the government, with support from the World Bank, would invest $200 million in the northern region under the Vanua Levu Tourism Development Plan.

He said $61.5 million would go directly to address barriers to growth, including transportation, infrastructure and basic services, as well as limited private sector and basic services.

He said the Government will continue to support development that is consistent with our broader objectives, ensuring that the growth we achieve is sustainable, inclusive and benefits all.

Gavoka added that Fiji’s economy was dependent on tourism and the services sector, which meant that Fiji needed to invest to significantly increase the 3 per cent figure.
