Nissan tests cold paint technology

Nissan has been experimenting with a car coating designed to help lower ambient temperatures inside vehicle cabins during the summer and reduce energy consumption by air conditioning systems.

Developed by the company in partnership with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiative cooling products, the coating uses metamaterials, synthetic composite materials whose structures exhibit properties not normally found in nature.

When parked side by side in the sun, vehicles treated with Nissan Cool Paint can achieve exterior surface temperatures that are 12 degrees Celsius cooler and interior temperatures that are 5 degrees Celsius cooler than vehicles treated with conventional automotive paints.

The coating’s cooling properties are said to be particularly noticeable when the vehicle is parked in the sun for long periods of time. Not only does a cooler cabin feel more comfortable, but it also requires less air conditioning run time to cool the cabin to a comfortable temperature.

Nissan says this helps reduce engine load, or in the case of electric vehicles, reduce battery drain. In both powertrains, efficiency and passenger comfort are expected to improve.

Nissan hopes the paint could eventually be applied to light commercial vehicles that spend most of their time outdoors, such as vans, trucks and ambulances.
