UWI awards $10,000 cash prize for unconventional disaster relief research and inventions

St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago – August 26, 2024 – Residents of the Caribbean are particularly vulnerable to the devastation caused by natural disasters, as evidenced by Hurricane Beryl’s devastation of the region. This unfortunate shared plight is also why Caribbean people are uniquely able to create a path to resilience. Hurricane and Earthquake Mitigation Research (HEAR) Award and awarding a $10,000 cash prize—a direct response to recent devastating earthquake and hurricane events and an encouraging invitation to research and innovation outside of traditional academic fields.
Application Open Any researcher or innovator Someone who is researching or inventing something to minimize the damage and suffering caused by hurricanes and earthquakes. The award is open to faculty, staff and students of the University of the West Indies, as well as the general public, including participants from other tertiary institutions and secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago.
The HEAR Award is part of UWI St Augustine’s 2024 Vice-Chancellor’s Research Awards, an initiative focused on inclusivity and research excellence. Professor Duraisamy Saravanakumar, Dean of Graduate School The Director of the HEAR Award at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, stressed that “Research should not be limited to traditional academia. The theme of this year’s research award is ‘Research by All, for All’. We encourage our stakeholders to see this not only as a research opportunity to reduce the impact of cyclones and earthquakes, but also as an opportunity for outreach.” The ultimate goal of the HEAR Award is to enhance disaster mitigation and recovery capabilities and provide a platform for everyone to contribute to the safety and well-being of the region.
The HEAR Award winner will receive a cash prize of 10,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars at the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Awards Ceremony on Thursday, November 14, 2024.

About the University of the West Indies President’s Research Award
The Vice-Chancellor’s Research Awards were introduced in 2023 to recognise and reward outstanding researchers at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, for their significant contributions over a five-year period. The awards recognise research excellence and are designed to stimulate and promote a strong research culture on campus and beyond.
The Vice-Chancellor’s Research Awards recognise outstanding research contributions at the University of the West Indies St Augustine campus between 2019-2024. Award categories include the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Best Researcher, the Most Influential Community Research Award, the Best Team Research Award and the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Innovation Award. In addition, there will be awards for the Most Outstanding Postgraduate Researcher and a Mentor Award.
In 2023, the award will recognize important research on topics such as COVID-19, asphalt-based sealants, and strengthening LGBTQI and GBV partnerships. This year, we are eager to recognize new research that addresses the pressing challenges of disaster preparedness.
