The most populous municipality is San Salvador Center with 743,781 people; San Salvador Este follows with 558,171 inhabitants, both governed by Nuevas Ideas, which won 28 mayoral posts, including 2 in alliance with Democratic Change (CD).
One of the 44 municipalities is governed by the Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena); three represent the Grand Alliance for National Unity (Gana), one represents the PDC, two represent the Party of National Unity (PCN), and one represents the PCN-PDC alliance.

- Nationalist Republican Alliance: 98,269 (2%).
The Acción Ciudadana organization analyzed these data in a report and concluded that 67% of the population is governed by the new idea and only 33% is distributed in other political institutions that will participate in the March 3, 2024 elections.
The report also shows that of the 44 municipal councils, only one has representatives of five political parties (Sonsonate Oeste), while 18 have only three parties; 15 have two parties and 10 have representatives of four political bodies.
Statistics show a decrease in the number of political parties in parliament “due to a significant drop in the participation ratios of different parties,” from 46% representation in 2021 to 41% in 2024 relative to 2021.
