Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the result was important to ensure the state of Johor continued to receive state revenue for development.
(FMT) – The Johor state government has formally requested the federal government to return at least 30% of state taxes, following an order from Johor Acting Sultan Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim last Sunday.
Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the application was submitted at a meeting between Finance Minister Johan Mahmood Merican; Economy Ministry secretary-general Nor Azmie Diron and Finance Ministry’s National Budget Office director Shahrol Anuwar Sarman.
“This matter is very important to ensure that the state of Johor continues to receive sufficient state revenue to enable all states to develop to a better level,” he said on Facebook.
Onn Hafiz said other matters discussed at the meeting included the construction of a new elevated junction at the Second Link, the building of a dam and riverside reservoir at Sungai Sedili Besar, and conservation plans in Kulai and Sungai Skudai in Johor Bahru.
“Also discussed were high-impact special national projects such as the proposed development of the Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (E-ART) for the public transport system in the Iskandar Malaysia region and the proposed construction of the East Coast Expressway Phase 4 (LPT4) from Mersing – Kota Tinggi – Johor Bahru.”
Last Sunday, Tengku Ismail expressed the hope that at least 20-30% of state revenue would be returned to Johor in the future.
He said all state tax revenues were currently transferred to the federal government.
“That’s RM4.8 to RM4.9 billion per year, and they give us RM1.4 billion. How are we going to take care of the people of Johor with RM1.4 billion per year?”
