KUALA LUMPUR: A couple pleaded not guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court on Monday (Aug 26) to charges that they neglected their three-year-old daughter, causing her to test positive for drugs last week.
The 26-year-old businessman and his 21-year-old wife were charged with committing the offence at a flat in Jalan Kuang Bertam, Kepong at 11am on August 19.
They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 34 of the Penal Code. If found guilty, they face a fine of up to RM50,000 or jail of up to 20 years, or both.
Judge Izralizam Sanusi allowed the couple bail of RM8,000 with one surety each and ordered them to report to the nearest police station once a month.
The couple were also ordered not to intimidate witnesses in the case.
The court is scheduled to open the trial on October 10.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Edwin Thomas of the National Legal Aid Foundation appeared for the couple. – Bernama
