The Verband Cockpit (VC) and the UFO unions have the following personnel: LufthansaSubsidiary Discovery Airlines launched a four-day flight on Sunday evening strike As announced by the Frankfurt union, pilots and cabin crew should stop working from this Tuesday (August 27) to Friday (August 30). All flights out of Germany are affected. The employees had previously voted explicitly in favor of strike action in a separate strike ballot.

The background is the conflict with the Verdi union, which signed the first collective agreement for the young airline’s exploratory pilots and cabin crew. The demands of UFO and VC barely differ in content, but the industry union wants to enforce its own collective bargaining agreement. They say Verdi does not have a sufficient number of members in flight operations and is being used as a collective bargaining partner by Lufthansa management.

Founded in 2021, holiday airline Discover Airlines has a fleet of 27 aircraft flying from Munich and Frankfurt to various holiday destinations in Europe and overseas. The fleet is expected to grow to 33 aircraft by 2027. There are about 1,900 employees on board, including an unknown number of union members. VC pilots have already carried out three rounds of strikes this winter. UFO has also called on its members to stop working to force it to negotiate with management.

In addition to regular wage increases of 16% to 38% for both professional groups by the end of 2027, the Verdi contract also contains provisions on allowances and working hours, company pension schemes or help in case of loss of pilot’s license. Verdi offers its members extended protection from dismissal and half a month’s extra pay. Harry Jaeger, a UFO tariff expert, said the motto “If you don’t participate, you will be terminated sooner” shocked the UFO. “Unfortunately, there is no other choice on the employer’s side than to strike.”

For the VC and UFO unions, this is also about leverage over the parent company, where they have been firmly entrenched in collective bargaining to date. The management has set up two flight operating companies: Discovery and City Air, which are not yet subject to tariffs and can take over flights previously operated by Lufthansa itself or its regional subsidiary Lufthansa City Line at a lower cost. Their fleets may shrink in the future, which means that jobs under classic tariff conditions will disappear.
