Opposition MP Ketan Lal has called on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to immediately remove Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya from her post.

In a statement, Mr Lall said the Fijian people deserved better.

“They deserve a government that is consistent with the principles of human rights and social justice.”

“I call on the Prime Minister to take immediate and decisive action to remove the Minister of Women, Children and Social Protection from her position. Fiji deserves compassionate, informed leadership that is committed to justice. The Minister’s actions and comments prove she is no longer fit for the job.”

Lal said Tabua had shown an alarming disregard for human rights and justice, values that are the foundation of our democracy.

He said her call for the death penalty not only reflected a profound misunderstanding of effective crime prevention but also put Fiji at odds with global human rights standards. It was more than a policy disagreement but a fundamental violation of her responsibilities and moral obligations as minister.

“I must reiterate my deep concern over the alarming stance recently taken by the minister, who advocates the reintroduction of the death penalty for those who traffic in large quantities of drugs. While I have previously condemned this reckless and regressive proposal, it is now clear that further action is necessary,” Lal said.

Fiji Live The Minister for Women and Children has been contacted for comment.
