Vice President Nyanden admits leaders have failed people

South Sudan’s Vice President Rebecca Nyanden de Mabio has admitted that the government has failed to provide services to citizens and support veterans of the liberation struggle.

She said the failure brought a curse upon the country.

Nyandeng spoke at the memorial ceremony The case of General Biol, the fallen veteran of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army On Saturday, Juba appealed to the country’s leadership to support veterans and their families.

“The money will go to our President Salva Kiir. We should support veterans while they are still alive so they can take care of their families,” she said.

“Let’s support the veterans and their children while they are still alive. We have veterans who have nothing to do. These people are like the walking dead. Let’s see how we can support them,” she added.

Nyadeng, who is in charge of gender and youth affairs, said she doubted that many leaders, including herself, would be able to be re-elected because they had let the people down.

The Vice President pleaded with the spirits of the martyrs not to subject the leaders to a curse.

“We hope that the soul of Biol Ajan will bring back the peace we have lost. A pastor prayed that the soul of Biol Ajan will be with the angels. I would also like to add that hopefully it will also be with the soul of Dr. John Garang to save our country,” she said.

General Biol Ajan Duout, a distinguished leader and former deputy chief of staff for operations of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at his residence in Juba.

General Biol Ajan, also known as Biol Asoode, was a key figure in South Sudan’s liberation struggle. Born on January 1, 1947 in Kongor, East Twik County, Jonglei State, Biol played a vital role in the country’s independence process.

In 2015, General Biol moved from the position of Vice Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs to Ambassador I and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

His leadership was not limited to official roles, as he served as president of the Twic East Community Association until his death.
