Telegram boss Pavel Durov arrested as part of preliminary investigation into alleged fraud
Telegram general manager Pavel Dourov is expected to appear in court on Sunday, August 25, 2024, after being arrested by French police at an airport near Paris on suspicion of crimes related to his famous messaging app, AFP reported. The 39-year-old Franco-Russian billionaire was arrested at Le Bourget airport in the north of the French capital on the evening of Saturday, August 25, an unnamed source told AFP.
Left-handedFrench Office for the Fight against Violence against Minors OFMIN issued an arrest warrant for Mr Durov as part of a preliminary investigation into suspected fraud, drug trafficking, cyberstalking, organized crime and promotion of terrorism. He is accused of failing to take steps to limit criminal activity on his platform.
“Telegram’s impunity has gone on long enough”“, said one of the investigators, adding that they were surprised that Mr. Durov came to Paris knowing that he was wanted. It must be noted that the Dubai-based encrypted messaging application positions itself as an alternative to American platforms, which have been criticized for the commercial exploitation of users’ personal data. Telegram promises never to leak information about its users.
In an interview with right-wing talk show host Tucker Carlson last April, Durov said he came up with the idea for an encrypted messaging app after facing pressure from the Russian government while working on VK, a social network he previously founded. He sold it and left Russia in 2014. He then tried to settle in Berlin, London, Singapore and San Francisco before settling in Dubai, which he praised for its business environment and “neutral”He also said at the time that the platform had more than 900 million active users.
