Another passenger in the car, a man in his 20s, is being treated for serious injuries.
Within hours of the teenager’s death, a second crash occurred in Donegal which left three people in hospital.
The victim of the first collision was named as Kian Dawson, who came from neighboring Derry with friends at around 11pm local time.
Football-loving Kian, from Carnhill in the city, was in the front seat of a car when it crashed at the intersection at Quigley Corners at 11.15pm on Saturday.
The two young men were passengers in the car, which appeared to lose control, crashed into a wall and ended up in a field.
It looked like the car had sustained a massive side impact in the collision.
Kian died at the scene and the car driver was seriously injured and rushed to Belfast Royal Victoria Hospital for emergency treatment.
The vehicle the young man was travelling in had R plates, indicating the driver had recently passed his driving test and was driving under restrictions.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators attended the scene of the accident this morning to try and establish the exact cause of the crash.
The R240 road where the tragedy occurred was closed for most of the day.
Inspector Seamus McGonigle, Head of Garda Traffic Team in County Donegal, said it was difficult for him to give specifics on the recent fatalities on Donegal roads.
He said: “There is very little I can say except to express my sincerest condolences to the family of the young man who lost his life and the young man who was seriously injured.
“It’s just another tragedy on Donegal’s roads and I don’t want to comment on it. It’s heartbreaking for everyone involved.”
This is the ninth death on County Donegal roads so far this year, compared to a total of 10 deaths on the county’s roads throughout the whole of last year.
Officer McGonigal appealed for people to pay attention when driving.
He also asked people to be mindful of weather conditions after Donegal issued a yellow rainfall warning for the coming days.
He added: “I just want to ask people to be as careful as possible when driving.
“It goes without saying that they should always wear their seatbelts, not speed and not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“But overall, I just want to ask people, young and old, to always drive with caution and caution.”
Tributes to Kian have poured in on social media. One friend posted: “Rest in peace bro, I’m gone too soon. Wish things could have been different. We had so many memories to make. Take care of the kids over the next few days. Fly high, always 16.”
Another said: “Rest in peace beautiful boy. Keane, many people are sad today. He will always be our angel now.”
Derry local councillor Mark Durkan said the crash in neighbouring Donegal had caused a “dark” time for everyone.
“During this dark and incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have been devastated by this tragedy,” he said.
