Hit by the reduction of subsidies and the events of recent months, the Society for the Protection of Animals organizes this Sunday its first flea market since May 13. An opportunity to bring the public back and raise funds.
The stalls of the fourth flea market of the year are full and the parking lot of Spanc is packed. After three and a half eventful months, the New Caledonian Society for the Protection of Animals has returned to life. It must be noted that the Courtio shelter found itself at the center of the violence that followed May 13. As Michel Gautier, president of the association, remembers: “IWe have to remember that right next to us, the water treatment plant was looted and vehicles at the plant were set on fire. The sports stadium was also damaged and parts of the buildings were set on fire. The only places with human activity were the shelters.” The shelter housed 125 animals then and still houses 125 animals today.
Thanks to the courage of our staff, this was all saved.

Today, the shelter still stands and the animals are doing well. Volunteers at the flea market again this Sunday. Pottery, linens, books, toys… This low-priced sale should help to replenish the coffers a little. “Spanc’s situation is difficult and even financially catastrophic.” According to its president,nOur needs by the end of the year are about $20 million, because we have been at least 50% in the red since the beginning of the year. So we have to absorb part of that and have the funds to finish the year.”
Michel Gauthier recalled:Since the beginning of the year, we have received only 200,000 francs in public subsidies. This is clearly not enough.” Subsidies account for only 12% of the association’s financing.”This means that 88% of our income comes from sponsorships, individual donations, products from events we organize (such as today’s flea market) and as a result of animal adoptions. However, we are currently only adopting out a few animals, which is about ten times less than usual.”
