Mumbai (Maharashtra) (India), August 25 (ANI): College student Chandan Yadav from Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh and teenager Ravina Gayakwad from Nashik, Maharashtra won the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the 8th edition of the Mumbai Half Marathon 2024 on Sunday morning.
According to a release from the Mumbai Marathon, Chandan, who has been on the podium many times, led the pack about half a kilometer from the finish line and crossed the finish line in 1:11.01 minutes. Nitish Kumar finished second in 1:11.54 minutes, while Piyush Mathane finished third in 1:13.20 minutes.
“I worked a lot for this win and timed my one-shot perfectly,” an excited Chandisinghat Yadav said after receiving the winner’s cheque and medal from cricket superstar and brand ambassador of the tournament Sachin Tendulkar.
In the women’s running, 19-year-old Ravina made a memorable debut in the 21km race, clocking 1:27.43. She was nearly two minutes faster than Senat Leshag (1:29.41), while Rukamani Buher took the bronze in 1:31.23. The slight Ravina had only recently started competing in athletics, having trained for the event for only three months.
In the men’s 10km race, Yuvraj Yadav won the title in 31.50 seconds, Manish Kumar Nayak won the silver in 32.14 seconds and Amit Mali won the bronze in 33.25 seconds.
In the women’s event, Sonali Desai returned to the winning ways for the second year in a row with a time of 39.47 minutes, while Divya Pingale won the second position with a time of 41.50 minutes and Rajni Tyagi was third with a time of 43.52 minutes.
More than 20,000 runners participated in the event organized by NEB Sports. The race started and ended at Jio Gardens in Bandra Kurla Complex. Runners competed in four race categories – 21K, 10K, 5K and 3K Family Run and a special race for over 1,000 school children. Participants included over 1,500 athletes from the Indian Navy, along with blind and disabled runners.
Sachin Tendulkar, speaking on the sidelines, spoke passionately about the vibrant and exciting atmosphere at the event and the increased participation of women runners.
“As Indians, we love sports but it’s time to make it a lifestyle by participating in various sports for physical and mental health. Our partnership with marathon events across India has been a success. I am happy to see Mumbaikars waking up early not only to run but also to cheer on the runners! Congratulations to the runners who completed the full marathon and all those who took part in the sprints. Let’s continue to make sports a lifestyle choice!” he said.
A team of visually impaired runners also took part in the race, with the help of Guide India Runners, along with physically challenged, wheelchair-bound and other physically challenged runners. More than 150 children from Mitrayana NGO also took part in the race for the first time, according to a release from the Mumbai Marathon.
