The final day of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Women’s Golf Open 2024 will go down as one of the most exciting and memorable in the history of the tournament. Tanzanian Iddy Madina emerged victorious, her first Uganda Women’s Open title after decades of trying, while Ugandan Martha Babirye suffered a heartbreaking collapse in the closing stages.
At the start of the day, Barbierière was one shot ahead and seemed to have the championship won once again. As the crowds grew and the anticipation grew, Barbierière’s control began to wane. A costly triple bogey on the 15th marked the beginning of her troubles, followed by another bogey on the 16th and another disastrous triple bogey on the 17th hole at the prestigious Acope Challenge. Despite a strong tee shot on the final hole, Barbierière’s troubles deepened as she four-putted and finished with an 80 for a total of 232.
On the other hand, Medina showed remarkable composure and skill, especially on the final hole. Hawa Wanyeche, also from Tanzania, lost by 8 strokes on the 18th hole, but Medina stayed focused and putted twice to win by two strokes and take home the coveted trophy.
“It’s been a long journey, but this win makes every moment worth it,” Medina said after lifting the trophy. “I’ve dreamed of winning this tournament for years and I’m so proud to bring this title home.”
As the sun went down, Johnnie Walker made sure the celebrations were absolutely spectacular. Ladies, guests and golf enthusiasts enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at the exclusive 19th Hole Experience. The evening was a celebration of Johnnie Walker’s commitment to excellence, with bottle service showcasing the entire UBL whisky catalogue, endless cocktails and a live performance by Solome Basuuta and his band keeping the evening lively.
The event attracted several VIP guests, including the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi, who openly expressed her love for golf and pledged to lead the transformation of her home course, Lira Golf, and promote the game across the country.
Eunice Waweru, Financial Director of Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), shared the efforts made by the organisation over the years to promote golf in Uganda.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the talented players who competed in this extraordinary tournament. Well done! At UBL, we believe in the power of excellence, progression and passion; values that are reflected not only in the game of golf, but in everyone who competed this week. Johnnie Walker stands for progression and excellence, and we are very proud to be part of this celebration of women’s excellence in golf tonight,” said Waweru.
She added: “I would like to especially congratulate and commend the winners of the tournament, who competed with great skill and determination.”
The evening also saw an awards ceremony to honour the ladies who had performed exceptionally well on the field, with teams from Tanzania and Ghana dominating the awards process, taking home the majority of the trophies.
