The Republic newspaper called on Prime Minister Robert Abela to resign following reports that he had instructed senior police officers “not to question those named in the hospital corruption investigation but to bring them all to court”.
In a press statement, La Repubblica claimed that this was to ensure that Joseph Muscat “would not be the sole mastermind of this fraud.”
They said the prime minister had no right to intervene and give instructions to the police when criminal activity was taking place, especially when “his own friends” were the main suspects.
“We are shocked to see government ministers giving evidence to journalists who knew that the police action was taken on the express instructions of the prime minister,” they said.
They also criticised ministers for “maintaining anonymity despite having witnessed illegal behaviour” and called on the prime minister in a press release to deny the allegations and, if not, to “resign before dark”.
