I am a highly motivated individual, my name is Onesmas Tumwekwatse, an experienced and trained youth educator from Bushenyi District with an unwavering passion to inspire young minds.
My journey to becoming a teacher is a testament to my perseverance. My parents are farmers, Banjunaki and Kemitarizo, and financial difficulties have been a constant throughout my education.
I started my secondary education at Runyonza School in Busheni but due to financial constraints, I had to change schools to ease the burden. Later, I transferred to St. Mary Simbia Secondary School in Bundibugyo area for my second year of senior high school and then to Winn High School in Busheni for my third and fourth years of senior high school. I then returned to Runyonza School for my fifth year of senior high school and finally completed my A-level education at Martin Luther King College in Kampala as a sixth year of senior high school.
The financial difficulties were indeed great – I had no pocket money and could only rely on school subsidies to survive. I remember that in order to save on transportation costs, I had to travel long distances to and from school every day.
After completing my A’levels, I studied for a Bachelor of Education (Mathematics and Economics) at KIU. It was a tough time indeed – for months I survived on fried cassava and chai tea. I had to rely on friends for accommodation and often skipped meals.
But the struggle didn’t end there. I later obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management from Kabale University and then a Master of Science in Mathematics from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).
This achievement was even more remarkable considering that I only earned Sh200,000 a month and paid 50% of my school fees out of pocket. I had to maintain a delicate balance between work and study, often skipping lunch and relying on tea and mandazi for breakfast.
Today, I have applied for a PhD in Mathematics from the Technological University of Manila, even though I am still working in a private institution with an annual salary of Sh300,000. My ultimate dream is to become a PhD in Mathematics at the age of 37.
As I reflect on my journey, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my parents who have made great sacrifices for my education; my dear wife who has been my rock; my brothers and sisters who have been my pillar of support; and my friends who have been a constant source of encouragement.
I am also grateful for the basic education I received at Kiyaga Primary School, Ruyonza School, St. Mary Simbia School, Vine High School and Martin Luther King Academy.
Additionally, I would like to thank Kabale University, Kyiv State University, and Maryland University of Science and Technology for shaping my academic and professional pursuits. I recognize the efforts of the administration in promoting education and creating opportunities for its citizens. I am excited to explore new opportunities that will allow me to make a lasting impact on my community and the greater region.
