Al-Arab has observed that some negligence in construction projects has resulted in a large amount of waste as contractors or project owners leave it on the land or scatter it in the surrounding open space without bothering to throw it at the designated location to save the cost of transporting it to the designated location.
Violation of the law
Citizen Muhammad Ali said that in most areas, the construction waste left behind has become a common phenomenon, and some contractors as well as the owners themselves deliberately leave construction waste next to houses, roadsides and in residential areas for people to use. It is also a phenomenon of converting vacant land into truck parking lots for a long time after the project is completed or because the project is stagnant and does not care about the work, although it is illegal, especially in violation of the public health law.
A citizen who did not want to be named saw that the development process in the area in recent years and the fact that many citizens built and renovated their own houses have generated construction waste, sand, gravel and other substances. Emphasizing that the monitoring mechanism for cleanliness in residential areas is inaccurate, there are illegal acts of building, project owners and implementing units ignoring garbage or transporting garbage to vacant land in neighboring communities, calling for the need to violate the construction company, supervise such violations of the company, fine them, and order them to clean up the area.
Recycle
Real estate expert Mohsen Jassim noted the need to recycle construction and demolition waste in a way that helps preserve raw materials and natural resources, and to support the local economy in marketing recycled products, which are considered cheaper than recycled raw materials of the same quality as those used in the infrastructure sector.
He said that a clear working mechanism for recycling construction and demolition waste revenue should be established to open up a path for investors and those who are willing to make such investments, and to strongly motivate them and give them great help and support.
Jassim stressed that the relevant authorities must provide investors with the necessary capabilities to carry out such investments, represented by the recycling of iron, wood, plastic, sand, bricks and other components used to make construction materials.
Tons of waste
Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari, environmental expert and consultant, stressed the importance of a clean environment, preventing large amounts of waste from accumulating and causing widespread environmental pollution, while benefiting the construction industry. The prices are reasonable and certificates are issued to prove that they meet the approved standard specifications.
Explained Dr. Al-Kuwari, this will bring considerable environmental and economic benefits to the state, especially since the state generates about 45 million tons of construction waste each year, of which 40 million tons can be recycled into stone and sand for construction and road projects through scientific and technological methods, saving the country about 900 million riyals per year.
In this context, Dr. Al-Kuwari pointed out that if the cost of importing one ton of these materials is 80 riyals, if they are recycled domestically in cooperation with some government agencies, institutions, agencies and the private sector, the cost is only 35 riyals, which is expected to save the country about 901 million riyals per year.
Independent Industry
For his part, Dr. Saif Al-Hajri, an environmental expert, confirmed that the construction waste recycling industry has become an independent industry in itself, representing an economic asset that is environmentally friendly, noting the need to create the right environment for investors to promote the establishment of waste recycling plants through the provision of land and soft loans for the safe disposal of various types of waste, including construction waste, electronic waste, chemical waste, glass, plastic and all items that need to be processed through recycling, in line with the vision of the State of Qatar, on the one hand, similar to many developed countries in this field.
Waste treatment center
The Waste Management Division of the Ministry of Municipalities is considered one of the important departments that complements the waste collection and treatment system that falls under the Public Services Division of the Ministry, as it coordinates with the Public Sanitation Department and private waste to receive household and solid waste collection companies to collect it at (4) transfer stations scattered across the country, where it is then compressed into trucks and transported to the Waste Management Center in Messaide, in addition to receiving construction and demolition waste as well as scrap tires, agricultural waste, automated slaughterhouse waste and solid waste.
The waste is processed according to its type and recycled as construction waste and tires, or recyclable waste such as plastic, iron, aluminum, paper, wood, glass, etc. is sorted and then sold to professional recycling companies.
