For those of you who are still struggling to get a good cell phone signal, here are a few things to consider: Nokia Bell Labs Working with Axiom Space Integrating advanced 4G/LTE communications capabilities into the next generation spacesuit for the Artemis III lunar mission.
Nokia and Axiom Space will work together to integrate high-speed cellular network capabilities into the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit to support high-definition video, telemetry data and voice transmission over a range of several kilometers on the Moon.
In other words, this advancement will allow the Artemis III crew to capture real-time video and communicate with mission controllers on Earth as they explore the lunar surface.
This is clearly a new take on “Can You Hear Me Now?”
Nokia plans to deploy the first cellular network on the moon as part of the Intuitive Machines IM-2 mission, which is scheduled to be delivered to the launch site this year.
During this mission, Nokia aims to demonstrate that cellular connectivity can facilitate critical communications on future missions to the Moon or Mars. Nokia’s lunar surface communications system, pioneered by research and innovation at Nokia Bell Labs, will be deployed during IM-2 and will be further adapted for use on the AxEMU space suit.
Thierry Klein, president of Nokia Bell Labs Solutions Research, said the company was delighted to have created such an important product.
“Just as astronauts need life support, shelter and food, they also need advanced networks to communicate with each other and carry out their important work,” he said.
Klein said this is not only a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but also a continuation of the great work that Bell Labs has been doing.
“Bell Labs has a long history of space programs, and Nokia is a leader in designing and building networks that connect the world,” he said. “We are leveraging the same standard technologies that connect billions of devices on Earth every day, while bringing new innovations and technologies to address the specific challenges encountered in space.”
The fully autonomous LSCS has two components: a network-in-a-box (combining the radios, base stations and core network elements of a terrestrial cellular network into a single unit) and an equipment module that will be integrated into the AxEMU space suit.
Both the network and equipment modules have been carefully designed to withstand the extreme environmental conditions of the lunar surface and the dynamic stresses of space flight, and are optimized for size, weight, and power consumption.
Axiom Space’s spacesuits will provide astronauts with advanced space exploration capabilities while providing NASA with the commercially developed human systems needed to travel to, live and work on and around the Moon.
Russell Ralston, executive vice president of extravehicular activities at Axiom Space, said the development of these next-generation spacesuits and Nokia’s lunar surface communications innovations are significant in furthering America’s leadership in space exploration, enabling a deeper understanding of the Moon, the solar system and beyond.
