A 15-year-old boy has been arrested by German police earlier today over a knife attack at a festival that left three people dead and eight injured.
At a news conference Saturday afternoon, a police spokesman confirmed they had arrested a 15-year-old but said no further information could be released, telling reporters investigators were still trying to determine the suspect’s motive and could not yet rule out the possibility of terrorism.
Police also confirmed that two men, aged 67 and 56, and a 56-year-old woman were killed in the attack. Eight other people were injured, four of them seriously.
Local and international media reported early Saturday that a man so far believed to be a lone attacker deliberately stabbed his victim in the neck during a festival in the western German city of Solingen to mark the city’s 650th anniversary.
The attacker appeared to stab passers-by at random on Friday night.
Police, under the command of special operations team officers, launched a massive manhunt using helicopters and more than 40 tactical vehicles, blocked roads in the area and asked residents to stay indoors.
A police spokesman told German media on Saturday morning that based on testimonies from multiple eyewitnesses they believed the attack was carried out by a single individual.
