In September 2023, project leader Dr. Victoria Keener and project specialist Chelsey Bryson traveled to Moorea, French Polynesia to participate in the biannual International Conference on Ocean Science, Policy and Law.This meeting is organized by Jon Van Dyke Institute (JVDI) and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technologywith the theme Te Ara Moana, or “Pathways to the Ocean.” The conference included a series of sessions dedicated to the Blue Pathways to sustainable island development. It was also the first meeting of the Pacific Islands Marine Stations Association (PIMSA), which was created by JVDI to provide a vehicle for collaboration in marine science and data, disseminate information about funding and research opportunities, and promote young academics and researchers.
The conference provided a unique setting where leading legal scholars came together with research scientists to discuss a wide range of pressing issues including ocean threats, governance, science and solutions. CRIOBE International Research Station (As shown below), attendees heard reports from marine research stations across the Pacific, and principal investigator Dr. Victoria Keener presented current trends and impacts of climate change in the Pacific region, providing climate context and environment for the work across science and policy fields in the coming week.
Later this week at the University of California, Berkeley Forrest Gump StationProject Specialist Chelsey Bryson introduced Green Climate Fund Sessions were also held for the Pacific region as part of a broader discussion on governance and funding opportunities. Chelsey was also one of three rapporteurs who presented key themes from each day at the end of the session, such as access to scientific information and data, equity in community engagement, and regional engagement. From there, attendees decided on goals and next steps for PIMSA.
On the final day, participants visited the nearby Cultural and Community Centre and heard a presentation from Cultural Director Hinano Teavai-Murphy. Tetiaroa Associationand then share one last delicious Tahitian meal together.
Communications Manager Krista Jaspers also happily followed us through the week, eager for the chance to dive in Moorea’s clear waters. After a productive week of meetings, Chelsey and Victoria joined her for a swim with humpback whales on the south side of the island, where the team was greeted by a curious humpback calf – a powerful and comforting reminder of why we are committed to this work.
