Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele today launched the National Roadmap for Maritime Workforce Mobility and Ship Registration.

In a brief statement before the official launch, Prime Minister Manele stressed that the roadmap is a new national policy promoted under the government’s “100-day plan for national unity and transformation.”

The Prime Minister stressed that this transformative move will lead to the upgrading of the Solomon Islands National University Maritime College and promote seafaring careers among the country’s young population.

The roadmap further aims to provide seafarers and fishers with internationally recognised qualifications that prepare them for employment in global shipping and fisheries.

“This provides a unique opportunity to expand our labour mobility programme into the maritime sector”, the Prime Minister stressed.

The Minister of Finance, Hon. M Sogavare, the Minister of Economic Development, Hon. M. Maelanga, the Prime Minister, Manele and the Chairman of the SIMA Board, Mr. R.Bokelema.

Prime Minister Manele said the government, through the National Maritime Authority, was seeking an international space for the Solomon Islands flag to be recognised and to attract international maritime operators and investors.

“We will upgrade our maritime and labour laws, fully exercise our rights and obligations as an international flag and open the Solomon Islands international ship register,” he stressed.

He invited development partners to assist in developing the national shipping registry into an international shipping registry.

Prime Minister Manele invited the private sector to consider investing and registering ships in the Solomon Islands.

The Prime Minister stressed that the roadmap will play a vital role in ensuring the resilience of our island communities, enabling mobility for our people and supporting the productive sectors that drive economic growth in the provinces. It is a vital lifeline to ensure the resilience of our island communities.

The Government of National Unity and Transformation is firmly committed to building a safe, secure, green and blue marine environment and advocates for achieving net zero emissions.

Prime Minister Manele also expressed his gratitude to partners including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the International Maritime Organization and its donors, the South Pacific Partnership Agreement and the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme for their valuable support in the transformation of the Solomon Islands Maritime Authority.

Today’s launch was attended by the Minister of Infrastructure Development, His Excellency Manasseh Maelanga (in charge of SIMA), Government Ministers, Government backbenchers, stakeholders, development partners, the SIMA Board, the Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA), maritime stakeholders and vessel operators.
