Austria’s next general election will be held on September 29, when the current parliament’s five-year term ends, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Nehammer wrote on X’s Weibo: “Tomorrow’s cabinet meeting will determine September 29 as the date for the election of the lower house of the National Assembly (Editor’s note: the date of the election of members of the lower house of the Russian Federation Parliament).”

Polls show the far-right Freedom Party (FPO) clearly ahead of its rivals, capitalizing on voter dissatisfaction with Nehammer’s ruling coalition of conservatives and Greens, which has been spurred by crises ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to inflation well above the euro zone average.

The anti-immigrant Freedom People’s Party (FPO) won Austria’s European Parliament election for the first time on Sunday, although its lead over the Niederhammer People’s Party (OVP) was less than one percentage point, lower than polls and election night predictions.
