As part of a plan to promote rural tourism, a train bound for the Mutipa tourist complex on the outskirts of Namibe province, carried, in addition to Huila, young people from the provinces of Huambo, Kuando and Cubango. On the morning of Saturday 24, Kunene and Welwitschia collided with a truck on the outskirts of Lubango that was carrying 10,000 litres of drinking water to be sold to residents of the Kanquinda community.

According to the Angolan newspaper Jornal de Angola, the truck driver did not respect the railway signs and did not see the automatic fences common on railway lines that announce the approach of a locomotive, thus requiring the waiver of the right of way in accordance with the requirements set out in the Highway Code and other standards.

Jornal de Angola also wrote that after the accident, the Angolan Medical Emergency Service (INEMA) was called to rescue the most injured and calm the emotions of passengers and dozens of residents living near the railway line.

In turn, the management of the Mossamedes Railway decided to suspend the trip until the moral and material conditions were created for this purpose.
