The Minister of the Interior and Public Security, General Jean-Baptiste Thiene, reiterated on Saturday the desire and commitment of public authorities to carry out structural projects to alleviate sanitation and water supply problems in the town of Touba.
“The President of the Republic asked me to reiterate before you his will and his commitment with the entire government to implement projects to alleviate the difficulties in sanitation and water supply in the town of Touba,” he said.
The Minister of the Interior spoke at the official ceremony of the 130th Magal de Touba, which was attended by Serigne Bassirou Mbacké Abdou Khadre, spokesman for the General Mouride Caliphate, and dignitaries of the Mouride community.
Jean Baptiste Tine, who led the government delegation, was accompanied by the ministers Cheikh Diba (Finance), Moustapha Djeck Sarré (Professional Training), Cheikh Tidiane Dieye (Water), Moussa Bala Fofana (Territorial Authorities), Ibrahima Sy (Health), Alioune Dione (Microfinance), Khady Diene Gaye (Sports), Mabouba Diagne (Agriculture).
The event was attended by senior officials of the Diubel regional administration, defense and security forces, ambassadors, and others.
The Minister of the Interior assured that the government will support Touba, the second most populous city in Senegal after Dakar, to improve the living environment and well-being of the people.
On behalf of the President of the Republic, he expressed sympathy to the inhabitants of Touba who were hit by floods during the Magal period.
Furthermore, the Interior Minister called on young people to stay in the country rather than engage in irregular migration.
“The government led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko relies on young people to meet the challenges of our country. We rely on the support of the caliphate to limit the wave of departures by raising awareness,” he insisted.
Jean Baptiste Tine asks everyone to pray for a good winter, peace, harmony and prosperity for Senegal.
For his part, Serigne Basirul Mbak Abdul Khader, spokesman for General Mourid Khalifa, highlighted the government’s efforts in organizing the magar.
In his address, he recalled the importance and significance of the commemoration of Magal, which marks the exile of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mbacké (1853-1927), the founder of the Mouride Brotherhood.
Serigne Bassirou Mbacké Abdou Khadre said that commemorating the Magal of Touba is “a symbol of victory” for black people, but also for Senegal, “because the sheikh has received benefits and blessings from his Lord after seven years of rule” in exile in Gabon.
The spokesman of the Mouride Brotherhood called on the disciples to take the teachings of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba Mback as their journey.
A delegation of Senegalese religious families also attended the official ceremony.
Imams, guides of religious groups, scientific celebrities, former ministers, businessmen, ambassadors to Senegal and representatives of several countries also attended the official ceremony marking the end of Toubamagal.
The 130th Magal de Touba was held on Friday (18th of the lunar month of Safar).
