Surely there is no way to fabricate a moving picture of two team leaders spontaneously and independently telling a similar story. So we are fairly certain that three deer tried to make their way through the convoy of plow trucks. But it didn’t go entirely smoothly.
Marc Wauters of Lotto Dstny was the first to come forward with this story. “Now I saw something I had never seen before,” said “Soldier” Wauters. “About fifteen kilometers from the finish, three deer suddenly appeared from the olive grove. The first animal easily jumped over the team doctor’s car, and the second one landed right on the second support vehicle of Euskaltel.”
“Suddenly I saw a deer trapped between the bikes on the roof of their convoy truck,” added Wilfrid Peters. “The animal struggled to free itself and a bike fell off the roof so it was able to free itself. They are serious animals.”
“I can only confirm this story,” laughed Euskaltel spokesman Unai Iraragorri half an hour after the race. “The frame was completely destroyed and one of our riders, Txomin Juaristi, fell in the commotion, but luckily there was no major damage.”
The photo was taken from a truck in the following convoy immediately after the collision. If I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have believed itthe apt title read. You have to see it to believe it. (gvdl)
