Santokhi honours Surinamese young swimmers for outstanding performance at Goodwill Swimming Championships

President Chan Santohi salutes young Surinamese swimmers participating in the 2024 GOODWILL Swimming Championships in St. Lucia at the Presidential Palace.

The team, made up of swimmers aged between seven and 17, won no fewer than 39 medals, including 12 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze.

In his congratulations, the President expressed his appreciation for the outstanding performance of these young athletes and stressed that the team’s achievements are not only the pride of the athletes themselves, but also the pride of the entire country, government and society.

Suriname has sports responsibilities within CARICOM, which means that Suriname plays a coordinating role in the development of Caribbean sports. The President stressed that he is particularly proud of the achievements of these young swimmers, especially considering the challenges that Surinamese athletes often face.

While Surinamese athletes gained valuable experience but did not win a medal at the last Paris Olympics, this group of youngsters was able to win a medal, which highlights their determination and talent.

The President encouraged them to continue improving their personal bests and strive to achieve greater success like former Surinamese swimming champion and current USA Swimming head coach Anthony Nesti.

Santoki affirmed that the government remains committed to supporting these young athletes so that they can reach their full potential and continue to represent Suriname with pride and excellence.
