New York – Microsoft announced today that it will host a cybersecurity event in partnership with Crowdstrike on September 10 next year, which will include a discussion of the “lessons learned” from the second company’s global software outage, which affected businesses around the world.
The tech giant said on its company blog that it would host a cybersecurity “summit” at its headquarters in Redmond, Washington, where it will invite industry partners and government representatives and discuss “concrete steps” to protect its infrastructure.
“The July 2024 Crowdstrike outage provides important lessons for us as an ecosystem,” Aidan Marcuss, corporate vice president of Windows, the operating system affected by the outage, concluded in the post.
Marcus said the summit will discuss improved security practices, resilient system design and industry collaboration for the benefit of customers, and hoped it would lead to “short- and long-term actions and initiatives” with security as a “collective goal.”
“We will share updates on these conversations after the event,” he added.
Crowdstrike attributed the largest digital “blackout” in history to a flaw in the Falcon software (which protects systems from viruses and cyberattacks), which failed to properly verify content updates to the system and caused the computers they were using to crash.
Microsoft estimated that the Crowdstrike outage affected 8.5 million Windows OS devices and advocated for the industry to collaborate to avoid similar situations as lockdowns paralyzed banks, airlines and hospitals, among other activities in different sectors. Efei
