Chad’s president is under investigation in France over his family’s real estate assets.
The National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) has begun investigating the presidential family’s real estate following revelations by Mediapart that around 1 million euros were spent on luxury suits in Paris, a legacy estimated at at least 30 million euros.
The investigation follows an investigation in January that was triggered by Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno spending €1 million on luxury suits. The PNF has launched a preliminary investigation into embezzlement and concealment. It is understood that the first suspicious transfer took place in early December 2021 and the second on May 4, 2023.
The PNF investigation has now been expanded to include French family real estate assets worth at least 30 million euros. Mediapart, which disclosed this information, indicated the tensions at the summit between France and Chad and pointed out the absence of Mohamed Idriss Déby at the 80th anniversary of the Provence landings.
PNF investigators examined Déby’s wealth in France and found at least 30 million euros in real estate assets, mainly located in Paris, Hauts-de-Seine and the Bordeaux Basin. These properties include high-end and luxury apartments belonging to several members of the Déby family.
Real estate purchases dating back to the early 2000s may also be linked to the practices of the elder Deby and his son, who were killed in 2021. Elected last May amid condemnation from non-governmental organizations and some Western prime ministers, Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno now leads the country.
The investigation was considered explosive and led to diplomatic tensions between the two countries. The Chadian president’s entourage did not respond positively to Emmanuel Macron’s invitation to hold commemorations in Saint-Raphaël on August 15, which were supposed to highlight Chad’s role during World War II.
The investigation could have diplomatic implications for France given Chad’s importance as the last ally in the Sahel, a region coveted by Putin’s Russia.
