BRUSSELS, 23rd August, 2024 (WAM) — The European Union has allocated an additional $35 million for humanitarian aid to West Africa as the region continues to face a dire humanitarian situation.
Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, the coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea and Nigeria are all facing food shortages and displacement caused by increasing political instability, ongoing intense conflict and widespread violence.
A press release from the European Commission said the funds will help meet the urgent needs of the most vulnerable people, particularly in terms of food aid, nutrition, health, water, sanitation, shelter and protection.
Specifically, the funds will be earmarked for humanitarian partners working in Burkina Faso ($10 million), Mali ($8 million), Niger ($8 million), Mauritania ($1 million), Nigeria ($5 million), and the Gulf of Guinea countries ($3 million).
The additional funds bring total EU aid to these countries to $160.6 million this year.
