KOROR, Palau – Preparations are underway for Palau’s upcoming Independence Day celebrations, with a host of events scheduled in the weeks leading up to the holiday.
On September 29, the celebrations will kick off with a bicycle race, followed by a day market and sailing demonstrations under the Japan-Palau Friendship Bridge in the morning. In the afternoon, speedboat races will be held in the same area.
The celebrations will continue on September 30 with the Mechesil Belau Congress at Bai ra Chamayong. The one-day event, themed around health, will be held in conjunction with the Independence Day celebrations. Attendees can visit stalls offering healthy food and free health screenings. The event will also feature a performance by an enka singer whose grandfather served as the postmaster general during the Japanese rule of Palau. That evening, Mechesil Belau will host a state dinner for officials and foreign guests.
On October 1, Independence Day, the Olcater Belau fair will be held on the Capitol grounds, with the day’s finale being a fireworks display. (By Eoghan Olkeriil Ngirudelsang)
