As part of the pilot project, Eskom will procure 20 electric vehicles, including light delivery vans and trucks, and install 10 charging stations.
South African power company Eskom Distribution said in a statement late Thursday that the trial laid the foundation for its plan for an all-electric fleet by 2040.
“By investing in electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure needed for electric vehicles, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint, but we are also stimulating the local economy and creating new growth opportunities,” said Gabriel Kgabo, General Manager of Eskom’s Group Executive Office for Distribution.
The project is part of Eskom’s goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the statement said.
The 10 charging points will be installed in partnership with Gridcars, South Africa’s largest charging network owner, at five Eskom sites in different parts of the country.

In the second quarter of 2024, 4,122 new electric and hybrid vehicles were sold in South Africa, up from 1,528 in the same period last year.
A total of 7,783 vehicles were sold in this category last year.
Some of the other organisations that have purchased or are in the process of purchasing electric vehicles in South Africa include the City of Cape Town, Golden Arrow, Adcock Ingram, Takealot, Anglo American and Woolworths.
In a bid to boost local electric vehicle manufacturing capabilities in line with the Electric Vehicles White Paper released by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition late last year, electric vehicles imported into the country are currently subject to higher import duties than standard internal combustion engine vehicles.
Currently, electric vehicles imported into India are subject to a 25% import duty, 7% higher than the 18% import duty on internal combustion engine vehicles.
