French industrial sentiment improved more than expected in August. The French statistics agency INSEE said on Friday that its manufacturing confidence index rose to 99 points in August from a 43-month low of 95 points in July.

However, the index remained below its long-term average of 100 points. Economists expected an increase of only 96 points. Statisticians said the main reason for the industrial recovery in August was the recovery of production expectations and an increase in foreign orders.

The personal production expectations index rose to 8 points from -5 points in July. However, the evaluation index of past production conditions fell from -6 points to -14 points. The order index rose from -20 points to -16 points, and the business confidence index (which includes services, construction, retail and wholesale industries in addition to manufacturing) rose from 94 points last month to 96 points.
