Mexico City (apro) – The Paris prosecutor’s office has requested a criminal trial against French actor Gérard Depardieu for the accusation that he raped his fellow actress Charlotte Arnould. The events were to take place in August 2018 at the translator’s home. Depardieu is already scheduled to stand trial for another trial next October, where he is accused of sexually assaulting two other women during the filming of a movie in 2021.
The French prosecutor’s office has called for a second trial of French film legend Gérard Depardieu on suspicion of rape.
Prosecutors said the artist should face criminal charges for the alleged rape of actress Charlotte Arnold. The request was sent to the court on August 14, but was only revealed by the local channel “BFM” on Thursday, August 22.
The case refers to allegations known in December 2020 that the actor raped Arnold twice in August 2018 at his home in Paris.
Prosecutors have since launched an investigation to determine whether a trial against Depardieu is warranted.
It will now be up to the examining magistrate to decide whether to proceed with criminal proceedings.
“A great and hopeful step”
Lawyers representing Depardieu did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment, while Arnold’s lawyer Karin Durieux-Dibolt said the prosecutor’s request was “the result of a long investigation that allowed the collection of evidence corroborating her client’s statements.”
The lawyer for the actress who was allegedly attacked added that it was “hopefully a big step forward” for Arnold.
Depardieu has denied a series of accusations of rape and sexual assault in recent years that have prompted comments from President Emmanuel Macron and others.
“I have never abused a woman,” Depardieu told local newspaper Le Figaro last October, referring to Arnold’s allegations.
The rape case against Arnold, 28, was initially dismissed in 2019 because the investigation did not find enough evidence, prosecutors said at the time.
However, the artist successfully lobbied for the case to be reopened in 2020.
Meanwhile, Depardieu faces a trial scheduled for October next year for allegedly sexually assaulting two other women. The incidents occurred during the filming of the 2021 film.
