DC Fountain, Romance
Fontaines DC returns with fourth album Romance, out now via XL Recordings. The follow-up to 2022’s Skinty Fia was produced by producer James Ford and previewed with singles “Starbuster,” “Favourite,” “Here’s the Thing,” and “In the Modern World.” “We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance,” guitarist Conor Deegan shared in a statement. “Each album has moved away from the prism of Ireland, like (Mercury Prize-nominated debut) Dogrel. The second album (Grammy-nominated Hero’s Death) was about this detachment, and the third album (Skinty Fia) was about displaced Irish people in the diaspora. Now we look for where there’s still something to be romantic about.” Read our Romance review.
Sabrina Carpenter, Short n’ Sweet
Sabrina Carpenter has released her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet, via Island Records. The follow-up to 2022’s Emails I Can’t Send spans 12 tracks, including lead-in singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” In an interview with Variety, Carpenter described the album as the “sexier older sister” to Emails, explaining, “This is my second ‘coming of age’ album; it’s a companion, but it’s different. I would consider this the second album when it comes to having full creative control and being a full-fledged adult.”
Hive Spirit, you have to lose something
Spirit of the Beehive has unveiled a new album, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING, via Saddle Creek. Following ENTERTAINMENT, 2021’s DEATH, and 2023’s i’m so lucky EP, the 12-track LP includes previously shared singles “LET THE VIRGIN DRIVE,” “SOMETHING’S ENDING,” and “I’VE BEEN EVIL.” Band member Corey Wichlin said in press materials that the goal for the new album was to “do something that was intentionally less confrontational.”
Magdalena Bay, imaginal disc
Magdalena Bay’s second album, Imaginal Disk , has been released via Mom+Pop. The follow-up to 2021’s Mercurial World was preceded by singles “Tunnel Vision,” “Image,” “Death & Romance,” and “That’s My Floor.” “For me, it’s about these layers of meaning… The album itself is just an exploration of self and consciousness, and it’s very personal in some ways,” the duo’s Mica Tenenbaum told The Line of Best Fit. “But of course, we love incorporating science fiction into the lyrics and the narrative and the storytelling.”
Gift, lighting
GIFT has released their sophomore record, Illuminator, via Captured Tracks. The follow-up to 2022’s Momentary Presence features previously shared tracks “Wish Me Away,” “Going in Circles,” “Later,” and “Light Runner.” “When I started GIFT, it was essentially my project, and Momentary Presence was my style,” explained lead vocalist and guitarist TJ Freda in our Artist Spotlight interview. “When it came time to record Illuminator, everyone seemed more engaged and really wanted to be a part of it. The last album was during COVID, which was a little difficult, and I didn’t want to wait for anyone, so I took over. But this time around, I was really inspired by how I was able to work with everyone individually.”
Nicole Miglis, Myopia
Hundred Waters singer and multi-instrumentalist Nicole Miglis has released her debut solo album, Myopia, via Sargent House. Singles “All I See Is You,” “Autograph,” “Lure,” and “Sleep All Day” have been released ahead of the release. “It’s about the myopia of desire, love, obsession, and feeling like you can only see that person in everything and everywhere,” Miglis said in press materials. “And also the myopia of the individual, not seeing your own potential or power, not broadening your horizons; limiting beliefs.”
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, “Woodland”
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have released their first new album in four years. Woodland follows their 2020 covers record All the Good Times and was recorded at the couple’s Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville. “Woodland is at the heart of everything we do and has been for the past two decades,” they said in a statement. “We’ve spent the past four years almost entirely within its walls, bringing it back to life after the tornado of 2020 and making this album. The music (the songs) are a whirlwind of contradiction, emptiness, fullness, joy, pain, devastation, eternity. Now.”
Illuminati beauties, power
Grammy-winning producer and engineer Sarah Tudzin’s project Illuminati hotties returns with a new album. Power is the follow-up to 2020’s Let Me Do One More, featuring previously included tracks “Can’t Be Still,” “Didn’t” (a collaboration with Cavetown), “The L,” and the title track. In 2022, Tudzin moved to an Airbnb in the Joshua Tree Desert, where he completed seven songs before hiring Death Cab for Cutie drummer Jason McGerr in April 2023 to record drums in suburban Washington state. According to a press release. “This is not a love album, either. Rather, it’s a real-life record of all that Tudzin has endured or enjoyed in the long time since the last batch of infectious Illuminati hotties.”
Weak people, I make the bed
The Softies return with their first new album in 24 years, The Bed I Made, available now via Father/Daughter. The duo, comprised of Tiger Trap’s Rose Melberg and Pretty Face’s Jen Sbragia, have previewed songs from the LP, “California Highway 99,” “I Said What I Said,” “Tiny Flame,” and “Go Back in Time.” Shortly before writing and recording the album, both members lost their mothers. “Grief was an incredible opening,” Melberg said in a recent interview with Paste. “We’re both very sensitive and we both seek a lot of comfort from each other. “I think this album really came out of a renewed emotional connection between Jen and I.”
Cash Cobain, Play Cash Cobain
Cash Cobain has released his much-anticipated new album, PLAY CASH COBAIN. Following up on last year’s Pretty Girls Love Slizzy, the New York rapper and producer has promoted the record with singles “Dunk Contest,” “Fisherrr,” “Rump Punch,” and “Problem.” It features collaborations with Flo Milli, Big Sean, Fabolous, Luh Tyler, YN Jay, Anycia, 6lack, Don Q, Rob49, Chow Lee, and more.
My hammer is within reach
New York band Closebye (featuring bassist Margaux, who was recently interviewed by Artist Spotlight) have released their second album, Hammer of My Own. The follow-up to their 2022 debut Lucid News includes preview tracks “Two Knocks” and “Lucky Number.” According to singer-songwriter Jonah Paul Smith, the album’s lyrics are about “the struggle to come to terms with self-sufficiency, the constant shifting of responsibilities, projections, co-dependency, ending with a comforting new independence and the realization that only you can be your own savior.”
Body meat, Starchris
Starchris is the debut album from Body Meat, the project of singer-songwriter and producer Chris Taylor. The album was previously released via Partisan Records and includes the singles “North Side,” “High Beams,” “Focus,” “Electrische,” and “Crystalize.” Although this is Taylor’s first full-length album since creating the pseudonym in 2016, the Philadelphia artist has released multiple EPs, including 2021’s The Year of the Orc and 2019’s Truck Music.
