A Georgian manuscript has sold for £1 million at an international auction.
Johann Zosim’s manuscripts are sold at Christie’s for £1,000,000 – £1,500,000.
Today, June 11, the Schøyen Collection of Manuscript Masterpieces at Christie’s London auction will feature Sinai (Egypt) manuscripts in Aramaic and Georgian.
It is one of the most important pieces of Christian Palestine written in Aramaic, a dialect of Western Aramaic used by the Melkite Christian communities in Palestine and Transjordan from the 5th to the 13th centuries.
Only a few inscriptions, palimpsests (manuscripts whose pages were cleaned and reused as writing material) and manuscripts have survived. This manuscript contains the earliest text of the Gospels written in the closest dialect of Aramaic (the dialect of Jesus).
The palindrome was copied by the famous calligrapher, writer, translator and bookbinder, the monk John Zosime. It is written in Georgian script and survived from the 10th century at the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai.
According to the auction house, the manuscript was created in Hucuritic script by the Georgian monk and scholar Ioane Zosime in 979. The work is being sold from the collection of Martin Schoen.
In the summer of 1955, 15-year-old Martin Schoen bought his first antique book in Florence – a fragment of a French sermon manuscript from 1300 BC. The acquisition of this manuscript started the history of one of the most extensive manuscript collections ever.
In the late 1980s, Martin Schoen and his collection became known to auction houses, scholars and dealers. It would have been impossible to amass a collection of this size and quality in the second half of the 20th century, but Martin Schoen succeeded.
The collection includes 1,300 cultural and historical monuments and World Heritage manuscripts such as the Crosby-Schoen Codex, the Holkham Hebrew Bible, the Sinaitic Codex and the Herardsbergen Bible, as well as Greek literature, masterpieces of humanism, early English law, the Scottish Chronicles and more.
It is reported that the auction will start at 17:00 Tbilisi time.
