Do you remember what you were doing on November 11th last year?

Today is Memorial Day, so you may have attended one of the many commemorations taking place across the country. Maybe you celebrated freedom on Singles Day, a popular antidote to Valentine’s Day in Asia. Or, you attended a wedding.

November 11 was the most popular wedding day for couples last year: a total of 1,799 couples walked into the wedding hall across Australia on that day.

One such couple was Eugene Tang and Catherine Harbuz, both 30, who held their wedding at the National Art School in Sydney’s east, a fitting location since they met in 2012 while studying art in Perth.

Both creatives, Don and Hubz’s first photos were taken at Hibernian House, a graffiti-covered building in central Sydney that is home to many artists. “We wanted to find somewhere that was a little bit cool, unique and funky,” said Hubz, the high school visual arts administrator.

Tang said they chose this wedding date “because it’s easy to remember, and four ones plus 23 is a nice sequence.”

“It feels good.”

While neither realized the day would be so popular, Habz said many vendors were fully booked for weddings. Tang, a customer service representative for men’s tailoring store InStitchu, which does many weddings, said he noticed the date popping up multiple times.

Melbourne consultant Tony Tran, 32, and his lawyer husband Jake, 36, are another 11/11 couple. Tran, who is Vietnamese, said he originally chose April 15 because his uncle told him it was the most auspicious date for marriage based on his and his husband’s Chinese zodiac signs (coincidentally, April 15 was the tenth most popular wedding date last year). But unfortunately, their first choice of wedding venue was fully booked. The couple held a traditional tea ceremony on April 15 and postponed the wedding until November.
