The Nigerian Hydrological Service has warned the public that water levels in the Niger River will rise until August 22, 2024.
The alert was in response to a report by the Niger River Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, which noted that upstream activities in Niger and Mali were exacerbating the situation.
“Floodwaters from these two countries are expected to gradually enter Nigeria through Kebbi State,” said a statement signed by Umar Mohammed, director general of Nigeria’s National Health and Safety Service, on Friday.
The statement further noted that the operators of the Kainge and Djebba dams on the Niger River have been notified and are fully prepared to deal with the situation.
“It is noteworthy that as of August 22, 2024, the reservoir of the dam is no longer overflowing,” Mohammed stressed.
NIHSA advises states and communities along the Niger River Basin to remain on high alert as floods are expected to reach their highest levels in late August to September.
The agency assured everyone that it “will continue to monitor the flood situation in the country and provide regular updates to the public.”
